About the Department of Apparel & Textiles
The Department of Apparel & Textiles, as one of the major disciplines of Home Science, in Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University.
Our department has contributed to qualitative teaching producing a number of graduates, post graduates and research scholars through Four year Home Science (Hons.), Four year B.Sc. (Hons.) Fashion Technology undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. Many innovative and productive research programmes were carried out by the faculty and students for the benefit of industry. Activities were extended to the consumers through various need based training programmes. Besides doing extensive research work in designing both for the normal and the differently abled individuals, the department has worked extensively on other thrust areas such as natural dyes, sports clothing, functional clothing, nano textiles and healthcare textiles. Relevant software was also developed in the thrust areas.
Amongst the various projects handled in the department, ‘NAIP – Value Chain in Natural Dyes’ entails a special mention as it has bagged the ICAR Best project award. Projects proposed through NDTQAL (Natural Dyes and Textile Quality Analysis Lab) namely ‘Bio-degradable ecopaint production for idol painting with Natural dyes on large scale’ taken up in 2015-16 and 2016-17 were sponsored by Telangana State Pollution Control Board are the crowning achievements of the department. PJTSAU funded project titled Eco Holi Colour Production for Environmental & Human Safety” taken up in the year 2017 garnered accolades not only in Telangana but also in Kerala.
Realizing that there are no accredited laboratories in our state that can completely qualify a fabric for its end use suitability, the department has established a Textile Testing lab which is ISO certified. The vision of the department is to cater to the needs of textile and apparel units, export houses, handloom societies, retailers and boutiques that deal with textiles and apparel. The lab offers a wide range of testing services on a payment basis to the industry.
Our mission:
To provide qualitative teaching, need based research and interactive outreach to address the needs of consumers, weavers, Apparel and Textile industries, entrepreneurs, academic institutes and fashion goers in relation to production, distribution and consumption of textiles and apparels.
Our Strengths:
The department of Apparel & Textiles focuses on providing quality education to the students by preparing the students as professionals in specialized fields of Apparel & Textiles. This department has initiated computer Aided designing by giving training to teachers of various Universities and Institutes. Students acquire perfect knowledge in Computer Aided Designing related to textile and apparel that gives confidence in executing the design related work independently. This programme also focuses on Consumer & family needs, which is a holistic approach to serve the society and thereby the nation.
Faculty:
Young and dynamic faculty members of the department give personal attention to each student and record their progress. They are available to all students for solving any problems related to academic, research & extension. Abroad trained faculty provides good global exposure to students. They interact with various textile, apparel & related entrepreneurs continuously for providing excellent opportunities to students.
What we offer:
The department of Apparel and Textiles offers two undergraduate programmes viz., Home Science and Fashion Technology; Post graduate and Ph.D in Textile & Apparel Designing. The department provides an exciting array of opportunities to learn from concept to the production and marketing of textiles, apparel, household and technical fabrics. Through coursework, internships, study tours, interaction with industry experts and through need based scientific research, students will have good exposure and job orientation that improves their career opportunities.

- Textile and Apparel Designers under Ministry of Handlooms and Handicrafts, Central Silk Board
- Faculty at Government Polytechnic colleges, Board of Intermediate, Vocational Degree colleges, Gram Tarang Employability Training Services, UPS–Department of Clothing Technology.
- Academician at Central Government and other Private Academic Institutes to teach Fashion and Apparel courses.
- Managers at allied Government institutions include Central Social Welfare Board, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment Board and many more.
- Production Managers, Merchandisers, Designers- Textiles & Apparel, Quality Control Inspectors, Free-lancer Apparel and Textile Designers, CAD Professionals, Dyeing and Printing Consultants at Textile and Apparel Industries.
